Start unsubscribing people.

Some of you have probably heard the advice of  "Don't unsubscribe, because that only verifies your email address."

That's so 1999. How about following advice from 2007. If you don't want to be on a mailing list, unsubscribe.

Should you know who is sending you emails? Like Caller ID on your phone, it's important to know who is actually trying to contact you. With a phone, we can decide to pickup or not. We can even set up the phone to reject any calls from callers blocking their number.

Ever notice how a lot of spam come through with just First Names?
Spammers like to use this technique because everyone probably knows a Joe, John, Mary.

However, I'm sure that while you are quickly scanning through 100 junk emails on Monday morning, you are pretty much ignoring most of those First Names, even if it's your sister's name.

Uh oh. How does YOUR name display in your emails? Is it Spam Like?

Set Default Domain address to fail Print E-mail
Written by Brian

As I was checking the spam filters on the server this morning, I saw a wave of crap from bogus earthlink accounts.

The main reason is that your website (yourdomainname.com) is set to send ALL email addressed to that domain to you. (Default Address)

This is not a good setup, as you then get hit by dictionary attacks where they send to every name and word @yourdomainname.com, AND it gets delivered.

A better setup is to decide what addresses you are actually going to expect mail to, like  'info@',  'sales@', 'BigDaddy@', and set those up as Individual forwards.  Then set Default Address to:    :fail:  (yes, include the colons).  This will tell the server to not accept any mail except for 'known' addresses (your forwards, or if you setup a mail account).
You'll see a huge decrease in spam.
